What is occupational therapy for children & young people?
Occupational therapy helps children and young people participate in the everyday activities that matter to them. These "occupations" include:
- •Self-care activities like dressing, eating, washing and using the toilet
- •Learning and school activities, including handwriting, attention and organisation
- •Play and leisure activities that help children develop and have fun
- •Social participation and building relationships with peers and adults
If a child or young person finds these activities challenging, an occupational therapist can help identify why and work with them, their family and school to develop practical strategies and support.
How we work with families and schools
We believe that the best outcomes happen when everyone works together. Here's how we approach collaboration:
- •
Listening first
We start by understanding your concerns, your child's strengths and what matters most to your family.
- •
Agreeing goals together
We work with you to set clear, meaningful goals that reflect what you and your child want to achieve.
- •
Sharing practical strategies
Our recommendations are practical and realistic, designed to be used in everyday life at home and school.
- •
Clear written information
You'll receive a written report with clear recommendations that you can share with schools and other professionals.
